“Dr.S.G.Desai”, the enriched Medical Library forms an important constituent of the KLE Society’s Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College & Research Centre at Belgaum, now a Deemed University, under the new name of KLE University. Born along with JNMC in the year 1963 on the campus of Lingraj College Belgaum, it was moved to the first floor of the present main building of the same Medical College. Finally, it was moved to its present independent two - storied building in the year 1974.
The creation and execution of the JNANA SOUDHA was inspired by ideas like: acquisition of relevant knowledge, intellectual exploration and flights into the limitless skies of Research. The interiors of this building have the necessary infrastructure suitable for study into various aspects of human health, care and cure. As on today, this Library offers to any aspirant in the field, a pool of 28716 books that are meticulously chosen for their contents; added to this are 10003 back volumes of relevant fields and this unit has been subscribing to as many as 204 well known national and international journals. Almost all the principle medical branches are covered by these reading materials.
Library facilitates the fully air condition and Database search KIOSK.
Teaching and non teaching faculty and registered students at ‘KLE University’ automatically get membership. Local practicing medical doctors can enroll themselves as members on a refundable deposit of Rs. 1000/- to have access to the reading services of the Dr.S.G.Desai. For using the Library facility some formality i.e. introduction through any faculty of ‘KLE University’ is followed. Army Medical Staff also can avail themselves of the services of the Library. Visitors as well as outsiders can also make use of the library through identification and payment of some fees.
Negotiations are on to establish an educational hot-line to other famous national, International Libraries. Academics for some suitable links for exchange of matching material (as well as visual discs, both print as well as computerized information) to enable sharing of knowledge and further enhancement of the needed material. In this regard many a scheme is being contemplated for sharing of knowledge globally in the fields concerned in order to widen the horizon of our understanding.
